Some Rugs Can’t Be Cleaned

…at least not wet cleaned. At our Boston area carpet and rug cleaning facility we are seeing more rugs with silk and rayon (aka viscose) accent fibers.  While most hand knotted rugs are 100% wool pile, these rugs have 10-20% silk or rayon fibers in the pile. These fibers, when wet cleaned, will lay flat and will not “pop” back up when dried. The best method to clean any textile usually involves some kind of water-based detergent and a complete flushing action using water-this process dissolves greasy and grimy soils, suspends them and then flushes or rinses away the dirt. If you have rugs that  were woven with fibers other than wool you may have an option.
