What is that STINK?

August 31, 2011

ANSWER: If a foul odor is coming from your rugs and you DO NOT have pets you may have purchased a machine tufted rug. Machine tufted rugs can be quite beautiful when viewed from above, turn these beauties over and the odor may hit you quickly. Machine tufted (aka hand-tufted) rugs are made to look like a real hand-knotted Oriental rug-designs, colors etc. But in our Boston area rug and carpet cleaning plant we have noticed for some time the foul odor coming from the back of machine tufted rugs-the actual cause of the odor is the souring or breaking down of the latex adhesive manufacturers use to hold the backing of the rugs together. For several years some manufacturers have been using inferior binding agents as a way to save money in their process. A customer pruchasing these rugs would not about the inferior adhesive until they hired a company to clean the rug-wet or dry/solvent cleaning these rugs triggers the odor problem-note: when the rug is dried after cleaning the odor does not go away. The picture below shows what to look for (or avoid) when searching for your next floor covering. Notice the cotton glued-on backing-this is a tell-tale sign of an inferior rug!
