Yes, we are definitely talking about area rugs. The rugs you can purchase at the big box retailers, specifically. These rugs known to those in the cleaning industry as hand-tufted or machine tufted rugs are problematic for so many reasons, however in this video we’ll discuss shading also know as pooling of the face fibers (usually wool). The picture in the upper left of the screen shows one of our Boston area rug cleaning customer’s Pottery Barn rugs. Notice that some areas appear darker than others-this is referred to as shading. The cause is usually due to uneven wear/walking on the rug-because of the unusually low fiber retention rate of these “fake” oriental rugs the wool will not lay in same direction it did when it left the factory, causing the light to reflect differently than lightly walked-on area. The end result shows a rug that appears wet, or darker in one area and dry or lighter in others.
