Quite The Hole…No?

January 14, 2011

The picture and the accompanying video show a problem that can occur with carpeting, but is more prevalent with hand-knotted Oriental rugs.  The hole you see in one corner is not a wear issue and it wasn’t caused by incredible forces pulling in opposite directions, thus tearing the rug.  A potted plant placed in the damaged corner caused this. Potted plants on rugs should always have a non-permeable base, usually plastic, which will contain any water that seeps through the terracotta pot or water that spills over the sides from over-watering. Proper drainage for house plants is important so you would want a catch-basin under the pot which will allow excess water to drain and will prevent the rug from getting wet.
