Water Damage Dos And Don’ts

March 18, 2010

Whether the water in your home came from a hard spring rain a broken water pipe or a malfunctioning appliance the prospects for restoring your home and property rely mainly on how quickly they can be dried.

If not attended to quickly even clean water can generate mold and mildew growth in as little as 36 hours. Below are some tips should a water damage situation occur at your home.

DO:

Remove standing water from flat surfaces by sponging, blotting or using a wet vacuum.

Remove lamps, telephones and decorative items from wet furniture tops.

Discard any wet porous materials such as cardboard boxes.

Place plastic bags under furniture legs to prevent carpet staining.

DO NOT:

Operate TVs, vacuums or other appliances while standing on wet carpet or floors.

Use heat to dry closed building interiors; mildew and expanded moisture damage may result.

Enter rooms where water has caused the ceiling to sag.
