The photo to the left is one of two chairs brought into our Boston area carpet & upholstery cleaning shop recently. The accompanying video has two segments: a before cleaning, showing some of the challenges involved with caring for older pieces of furniture followed by segment two showing after cleaning-demonstrating that antique needlepoint upholstered furniture can be safely and effectively cleaned. When attempting to care for antique upholstery it’s best to remember a few important rules:
- Always pre-test any liquid cleaning agent you intend to use in a hidden area of the furniture-remember to test all colored fibers!
- The pre-test is not complete until the test area is dry
- Be carefully over-wetting: Too much detergent may harm the backing material
- Always speed-dry the piece(s) when the cleaning is complete.
