Why your valuable Oriental Rugs should never be cleaned in your home…
Dry soil removal: As much as 70-80% of soils that collect on your rugs are dry particulate soils-sand, dirt, food crumbs-even the strongest vacuum cleaner can not remove the particulates that work their way deep into the rug pile. Proper beating of the rug backing to dislodge these soils can only be accomplished at a rug cleaning plant.
Furniture placement: Placing furniture back to its original location usually will create a dimple or indent in the rug which may not be possible to remove once the rug is fully dry. Also, prematurely removing furniture blocks & tabs from wet rugs will transfer dyes from the wooden legs onto the rug pile-these stains are usually permanent.
Specialty spotting: Because eliminating stains made from urine/vomit, wine, kids drinks and some foods will require prolonged drying times for spotting agents to work (sometimes as much as 24 hrs) in home spotting may not be practical. Also, in the case of urine & vomit access to the rugs backing may not be practical in the home.
Complete drying: It’s always best to have a wool rug completely dried prior to putting it back into use. A rug cleaned in the home can take a minimum of several hours or with high humidity or cold temperatures, even days to fully dry. The dyes used in Oriental rugs can bleed even up to several hours after cleaning when mechanical drying is not used.
Fringe cleaning: Fringe cleaning frequently requires specialty spotting and aggressive cleaning agents to bring back the familiar “white” look that we remember when new. To effectively remove embedded soils and “browning” from the fringes rugs usually have to be hung vertically overnight-impossible to replicate in a client’s home. Lastly, protecting the underlying floor from scrapes, scratches and color distortions usually proves impossible with in home fringe care….leading us to the next cautionary note…
Protecting the hard floors: Natural wood, marble, terrazzo as well as granite flooring can be permanently damaged when Oriental rugs are cared for in the home. Detergent over-sprays can etch & pit soft natural stones like marble and discolor some wood floors. Cleaning tools, usually made of stainless steel of aluminum, can gouge or scrape any type of flooring causing extensive damage.
The Solution….always have your Oriental and Specialty Area Rugs cared for by a company that provides in plant cleaning. In plant cleaning offers the most thorough cleaning and stain removal possible.
