Change?..I Don’t Like Change

Some change is good, some not

Does your carpet and upholstery appear different now that it has been cleaned?  The change is most likely due to the removal of soil, revealing cleaner fibers and possibly some pre-existing pile distortion or wear pattern.  The appearance of your carpet, Oriental rugs, and upholstery depends on various factors:  Texture, or the change in texture over time is a pivotal factor in fabric and textile appearance.  Texture is affected by normal wear and tear, abuse, oxidation and UV fading a.k.a. color loss.  Improper cleaning can also contribute to color loss and pile distortion and fabric/fiber abrasion.  Foot traffic, a primary cause of normal wear in carpet and rugs, will deposit the most soils on your floor covering.  Upholstered pieces receive their soils usually from food spills and body oils via direct contact.

The soils mentioned above not only can hide the original colors and textures of fabrics and textiles but may also produce physical changes.  These physical changes begin as soon as the items are put into use and eventually will cause a texture change resulting in an appearance change.

A comparison of the areas protected by furniture and adjacent areas of carpeting that get routinely walked on will easily demonstrate the effect of foot traffic on texture change.  The same is true with upholstery.  Many times the amount of texture change cannot be determine until a thorough cleaning has been performed.  Note: There are times when pile brushing and vacuuming may return a fabric or textile to a more appealing appearance, but never to the original look.

Some things to remember to help slow down the rate of texture change:

  1. Vacuum-vacuuming removes gritty soils that scratch and abrade fabrics and fibers.
  2. Proper cleaning-cleaning by your technicians trained to clean Oriental rugs, wool carpeting and various fabrics is a must.
  3. UV Damage-blocks out the sun when possible to prevent color loss.
  4. Spots & Spills-blot up spots and spills quickly-need help? Call 781-995-0683
  5. Protection-have StainGard Textile & Fabric Protection applied to your furnishings each time they are cleaned.  StainGard will keep dry, abrasive soils from penetrating deep into the carpet pile and help keep spills from becoming permanent stains-some protectors for fabrics are now made with a UV protection element to extend the useful life of rugs and fabrics longer.

Remember to have plenty of AVENGE Home Pro Spotter on hand BEFORE a spill occurs!
