What Your Carpet Retailer Forgot…!

May 12, 2010

Why don’t the people you purchase carpet from give you the information you need to help keep your carpet ( & rugs) clean and beautiful?  I’m sorry, I don’t really know the answer.  I can however, provide some useful tips that will keep the carpeting in your home (and office) staying soft, clean and healthy.

  1. Vacuum, Vacuum and Vacuum: As a general rule vacuum traffic areas 3 to 5 times per week.  This will prevent dirt from settling deep into the carpet. Walking on dirt and grit causes an abrasive action, which results in “traffic” lanes and worn areas.
  2. Clean up spills immediately: Do this before they become stains! Use Regal’s Home PRO Spotter ( see image upper right) for great results.  Call 781-995-0683 and we’ll ship you your very own bottle same day.  You may also call us  and we’ll talk you through the spot removal process using some everyday detergents and special spot removal techniques.
  3. Have your carpet (& upholstery) professionally cleaned every 12 months depending on use-more often for entryways and high use rooms and homes with pets.
  4. Reapply Staingard Carpet Protector: This should be done each time your carpets are professionally cleaned.  Staingard Protection helps keep spots from becoming stains and allows greater soil removal during vacuuming.
  5. Use Walk-Off Mats: Place mats at all entry points into your home.  Walk-off mats can prevent 60-70% of the outside soils from ever entering your home (or office).  Clean your mats regularly and they will protect your carpeting and all other flooring for years.
  6. Home Office Mats: Office chair casters can prematurely wear and de-laminate carpet.  Heavy duty plastic mats will help protect carpeting
  7. Re-arrange Furniture: Help even out the wear by changing the position of sofas and tables-this will add years to the life of any flooring material.
  8. Stop the Harsh Chemicals: Bleach, toilet bowl cleaner, acne medicine, plant fertilizer and pesticides remove color from both synthetic and wool fibers-use caution always.

Dangerous if in the Wrong Hands!

9.  Remove Shoes: Don’t bring the gritty soils inside

10.  Block the Sun: During high-intensity sun light draw down the shades and close the drapes.  This will not only prevent UV fading but will keep your home cooler in the Summer.  Window tinting also helps.

11.  Use a Powerful Vacuum: A HEPA filtered upright vacuum with a beater brush usually works best.  Be sure to change the disposable bag often to ensure efficient operation.

12.  Have Your Air Ducts Cleaned: Soiled air that circulates throughout your home will settle on your carpet, hard flooring and furniture (including drapery).  Not only will this increase your overall maintenance costs but soiled air can trigger allergic reactions in people with breathing difficulties.
