The photo to the left is one of two chairs brought into our Boston area carpet & upholstery cleaning shop recently. The accompanying video has two segments:  a before cleaning, showing some of the challenges involved with caring for older pieces of furniture followed by segment  two showing after cleaning-demonstrating that antique needlepoint upholstered furniture can be safely and effectively cleaned. When attempting to care for antique upholstery it’s best to remember a few important rules:

1. Always pre-test any liquid cleaning agent you intend to use in a hidden area of the furniture-remember to test all colored fibers!
2. The pre-test is not complete until the test area is dry
3. Be carefully over-wetting: Too much detergent may harm the backing material
4. Always speed-dry the piece(s) when the cleaning is complete.

Normal maintenance cleanings for your fine Oriental rugs will greatly extend their usable life. We usually recommend our Boston area rug cleaning customers have their wool rugs cleaned every 2-4 yrs, more often in a busy household. Commercial woven rugs may need daily vacuuming, spot/stain removal as well as professional services monthly, depending of the commercial building it is in (office suites, hotel lobby ) and its location within these buildings: entryway vs. executive board room. Occasionally accidents happen….some very severe. Color loss of the wool pile ( aka face yarns) is a common occurrence, as well as “white knots” that are usually cotton foundation yarns of rugs that work their way up to and through the face leaving what looks like “bleached” areas.

Additionally Oriental and other wools rugs can loose their color because of:

• Liquid Bleach spill
• Aggressive/improper cleaning
• Threadbare pile (showing the white cotton foundation yarns)

Now the good news: There are options Oriental rug owners have when confronted with this problem: Color correction, also known as dye correction.

The club chair in the above photo was brought to our cleaning shop recently by one of our Boston area carpet & upholstery cleaning customers. This is one of a two piece matching set that had been wrapped in plastic and moving blankets for a one month storage. The silk velvet fabric is so delicate and prone to “denting” that this short term storage left indents that exactly mimic the waffle look of a typical moving blanket. Our job was to bring the silk fabric on both chairs back to its original condition. Please watch the attached video for a more detailed description of our process.
